It’s been a glorious Easter weekend in the Land of Blog: the trees are now flush with blog-blossom, yellow blogodills decorate the fields, and new born blog-bunnies are at play in every vale. However, Easter wouldn’t be complete with the annual Isonomia Egg Hunt, and we can tell you that this year it was a cracker.

Not shutting our cake hole

In his treatise on ancient calendars, The Reckoning of Time, the venerable Bede tells us that in Anglo-Saxon times February could be called “month of cakes”, after the cakes which people offered up to the gods during the month. A cake charm also survives in a manuscript written in the tenth or eleventh century, which instructs us that a blighted field may be restored by leaving a loaf kneaded with milk and holy water under its first furrow.

January is a particularly rich month for folklore, as all manner of customs are required to ensure prosperity for the year ahead. Regular readers of the Administrator’s update will no doubt be aware that the Land of Blog remains an equally rich preserve of the traditions of yesteryear, and it will no surprise that we’ve been busy saying our ‘black rabbits’, burning hawthorn bushes, and dropping egg whites into water in order to guarantee you a healthy supply of articles in 2015.

Keeping blog and soul together

Legend has it that a pilgrim was once sailing home from the Holy Land when his boat became caught in a storm. Forced to take refuge on a strange and rocky isle, he met a hermit there who spoke of an opening among the cliffs leading straight to purgatory, from which agonised moans of the tormented dead rose. The hermit told how he had also overheard demons in the pit complaining about the power of prayer to rescue their victims. Upon his return, the pilgrim told this tale to the Abbot of Cluny, who decreed that the very next day, November 2nd, should be set aside as a day of prayer for the dead.
