Acorns, not oaks

Bin, Scan, Win!

I’ve come across two very different eye-catching green ideas in the last couple of weeks, both with the aim of switching young people on to more sustainable living. Their sources couldn’t be more different – two local authorities collaborating to inspire young people to recycle “on the go”, and iconic punk designer Vivienne Westwood promoting sustainable fashion. And while each is doing something exciting and ambitious, I fear that neither is reaching its full potential.

Planning, investment and white elephants

Eunomia recently released an update to our six-monthly Residual Waste Infrastructure Review. We maintain a database of non-landfill residual waste facilities – not just those that are currently operational, but also those being built or making their way through the planning system. Twice yearly we publish figures showing current and potential treatment capacity alongside estimates of future waste arisings. This reveals a ‘capacity gap’ between the amount of waste we’re likely to have and the facilities we expect to be in place to treat it – but the findings need careful interpretation.

It’s not all carnival in Rio

My memory may be failing, but I seem to recall that the first UN conference on Sustainable Development in Rio in 1992 – which I was lucky to attend – attracted more popular attention than its follow up conference, Rio+20, which is due to start later this month.

Trommel at t’mill

Until a week ago, the term “trommel fines” was rarely heard outside a materials recycling facility (MRF) or a waste transfer station (WTS). But that was before Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) issued the snappily titled Brief 15/12 – Landfill Tax: material used on a landfill site; and classification of waste.
