With the days at their longest and the elder all in flower along the hazy hedgerows of the Land of Blog, we’ve been feeling the festive spirit of summer this June. Of course, the Isonomia team chose not to celebrate the Solstice with fiery ritual – we’ve environmental concerns about even the most celebratory forms of backyard burning. Instead we held a virtual well-dressing ceremony to honour the deep wellspring of creativity that furnishes us with fresh and limpid articles season after season. If, however, you’ve spent the last month debauching with druids instead of drinking deep draughts from the waters of Isonomia, what have you missed?
Our most blessed article last month came from Peter Jones, who offered a topical piece on the waste management measures put in place by FIFA for the quadrennial festival of football that is the World Cup, and recycling practices in the host nation of Brazil. So, even though the flight to Brazil and back may have inflated the England squad’s combined carbon football boot-print in vain, Peter still takes home the Isonomia Blog Cup for the month.
It’s been a month for the Isonomia heavyweights, as we also saw a new contribution from the author of our all-time most read article, Thomas Vergunst. This time, Thomas turned his attention to the increasingly central role WEEE plays in our society, and asked whether the revised WEEE directive along with the concept of a circular economy may help to bring our technological appetites into a pattern of sustainable consumption.
Following a long absence at sea, we were pleased to see Clare Pitts-Tucker return to the Land of Blog last month. Clare has been working on the legislative issues surrounding shipping litter and the dumping of shipping waste at sea; the current tangle of legislation makes for a picture as murky as the polluted waters it is meant to protect, and Clare took the time out to unravel the issues for us.
Lastly, we extended a big Isonomia welcome to new author Rob Reid, an energy specialist with a garden to renovate who’s been wondering whether to install a heat pump while he’s at it. From the difference between a ground source and air source pump to the complications of retrofitting, Rob provided a well-informed overview of the considerations which should be kept in mind when deciding if a heat pump is right for your home.
Thanks to all those who commented on our articles; it’s something we and our authors really appreciate. Offering a platform for a variety of opinions and generating debate is what we’re all about, so if anything you’ve read here has made you want to dress an article with thoughts foul or fair, please do let us know through our comments section or even with an article of your own. We try to provide an informed but accessible viewpoint on a wide range of environment issues, so whether it’s recycling targets or reusing sofas that is on your mind, please do get in touch.
It’s easy to shift from visitor to commentator to author, and we’re always glad to hear from you. Whether you’re from Harlem or Balham, Brooklyn or King’s Lynn, with your help we will create a space where thoughts on topics from across the environment sector can be expressed and explored, enabling communication and cross fertilisation of ideas.
After our summer celebrations, we can surely expect the magical well of Blog to floweth over for another year; so, what might be in the offering next month? We should be able to look forward to a joint article from Emma Gowing and Steve Watson, who have been engaging the Welsh public on waste engagement and are bursting to tell us what they’ve learnt. We’ll have another article from Thomas Vergunst—who has obviously been flooded with creativity—this time asking whether the circular economy has killed the waste hierarchy. We will also be welcoming another new author through our relationship with EcoMENA, as Farinoosh Asayesh looks at trends in sustainable construction around the globe.
